GOCE+ Geoexplore II

 Information about project

The work content on the project can be divided to two main parts: geodetic and geophysical.

The geodetic part should provide combined gravity gradients for geophysical interpretations. These include primary combined GOCE/GRACE gravity gradients along GOCE orbits and over two test areas selected for geophysical interpretations. The preliminary data should be prepared during the first four-month period to allow for an early start of geophysical investigations. This task should be covered mainly by AAS and GIS.

Based on the best available combined GOCE/GRACE gravity gradients provided in May 2012 by Consortium 1, next geodetic tasks will include their downward continuation to ground and merging with gravity gradients derived from other available ground gravity and/or altimetry data over the two areas. This task should be pursued mainly by UWB.

The main goal of the geophysical part is to quantify an impact of GOCE gravity gradients and of their combination with other available gravity data on two geophysical applications defined at the two distrinct areas. The first application is to compare observed gravity gradients with those modelled for a mid-oceanic ridge. This application is selected by TUD for testing an impact of GOCE gravity gradients on modelling the lithosphere in medium spatial scales. The impact of the GOCE gravity gradients on geophysical modeling for exploration geophysics will be studied over the African continent where DIAS has an expertise.
